Daniel Johns Makes Dopey Joke
Silverchair frontman, Daniel Johns, has been left red-faced after a joke he made on youth radio station Triple J went a bit too far.
During yesterday’s interview, Daniel joked that he smoked marijuana with Bono, former Midnight Oil singer/now politician Peter Garrett, and wife Natalie Imbruglia while listening to the new Silverchair album.
“(Bono) invited me over to the house he was staying at in Sydney and asked if I’d play the demos and it was really one of the most surreal moments of my life,” he said.
“It was me and Natalie and Peter Garrett and Bono laying on Bono’s bed smoking joints listening to the Young Modern demo.”
Peter Garrett’s office was bombarded with calls from journalists keen to hear more of the scandalous story. Daniel has since apologised, insisting he is baffled people believed his claim.
“At no time have I ever smoked a joint with Bono or Peter Garrett. They are both well known to be very anti-drugs so that’s why I assumed everybody would know I was joking when I made that comment,” he said in a public statement on Silverchair’s website.
“Clearly that wasn’t the case and I feel sick that I might have caused embarrassment to two people who I admire so much.”
He added that he should “really just shut up and stick to singing.” That could be a very wise move.

It didn’t sound so much like a joke written out; I guess you’d have to have been there to find the sarcasm on his face or something. I can’t imagine being in the music biz and saying something false about a great like Bono - not very smart.

I wish I’d actually heard the interview, but I agree with you Jennifer - when you see the text as it was said it really doesn’t sound good. It’s a sad fact that singers are role models, and joke or not, it seems like he’s glamorising drug use. Not to mention that it’s a real no-no to implicate an upcoming politician in drug-taking activities with no foundation!
