Guy Sebastian Teams Up with John Mayer

They’re an unlikely duo, but it seems Guy Sebastian and John Mayer are making beautiful music together! Guy, who is currently Stateside recording his new album, announced the news to fans in his website forum.
“So I think this may be the best day of my life,” he wrote.
“I’m in LA at the moment recording and the band I have playing sounds crazy. I have John Mayer on guitar/background vocals and the rest of his band playing. The groove is amazing to sing to.”
The album is still in its early stages, but word is that we should hear it in the first half of 2009.

I thought (and hoped) that might eventually happen. Guy, David Ryan Harris and John are not new acquaintances and Guy is a big fan of them both. Cool.

This is a testament to Guy’s talent that singers and musician’s of the calibre of John Mayer and the revered Memphis Soul legends want to work with him to make music.
Always wonderful to see an Australian artist held in such high regard from international superstar musicians.
So if John Mayer and Steve Cropper have had input on Guy Sebastian’s next originals album we should be in for a brilliant album from him next year!
Good onya Guy!!

Yes when David Ryan Harris and Guy Sebastian did some work in the past I was hopfeul that John Mayer might get involved too, but I’m a massive Mayer fan so I thought it was just wishful thinking! I’m definitely keen to hear what this creative collaboration delivers!

It was always feasible Lkatulka. Guy and John are not just acquaintances. They are friends. When John was in Australia for the Arias a few years ago it was Guy he caught up with after the show, not the Aria winners or nominees. In fact he mentioned on Kerry Ann’s show the next day he was very tired because he and Guy had been jamming till 6am in the morning. It is also how Guy’s fans found out about Guy’s song being the World Youth Day anthem first. Another friend of Guy’s mentioned on a blog that he had been at dinner with Guy and John Meyer when Guy let slip a song he had written had been chosen. So good friends collaborating to make beautiful music was always on the cards. Despite Guy not getting the kudos he deserves from the music industry in Australia there are a lot of musicians in America who have a great deal of respect for him. Where do I begin to name them. They span 45 years of music history starting with the soul legend Steve Cropper. One day Australia will realise what an amazing talent came out of the 1st ever Idol series. It may just take America to hit them over the head with a sledgehammer though. A star like John actually willing to do backing vocals for Guy is more than amazing. It is a stunning testament to Guy’s talent. I love the way your site promotes and respects Idol musicians. Only wish more Australian sites did.

Thanks for all that Mandy! I didn’t realise John and Guy were close, but it’s nice that their friendship could progress into a musical collaboration. It’s always so interesting to see what results when great musical minds meet!
And thanks for the praise about this blog! Believe me, I know my fair share of industry types who have a snooty attitude about Idol and it’s something I just don’t understand. Right now, Australian Idol is the only mainstream vehicle supporting new music. We’ve had so much talent come out of that show. To dismiss those artists because they were discovered on reality TV seems incredibly unfair to me!
