Is Damien Leith The Latest Idol Failure?

Spare a thought for last year’s Australian Idol winner, Damien Leith. “22 Steps,” the debut single from his first original album has already fallen out of the Top 20.

Since its launch two weeks ago, “22 Steps” has dropped from number 11 to number 27. While critics see this as the beginning of the end for Damien, perhaps we shouldn’t be so hasty.

Early reports indicate that his forthcoming album, Where We Land is a solid piece of work. And it should be. After all, this is the first album made under Idol’s new format. Unlike other Idols forced to release a disc in a week, Damien was given time to write and record something he was happy with.

He was always billed as an unlikely Idol, not much to look at but with the voice of an angel. Not exactly the sort of guy that young girls clamber to get close to, but a big hit with the mums. It’s not a coincidence that kids buy the majority of singles, but adults wait for the album release.

Where We Land will hit shelves on August 20. Only then will we learn if Australia’s moved on to the latest reality TV superstar, or whether they still have a soft spot for this likeable Irishman.

I thought that Damien’s single ‘22 Steps’ did well to get into the charts, considering there was no supportive PR or air play. He certainly tried himself, by appearing on various radio stations which seemed to shut him down as soon as he was off. I know from personal experience, that many of the radio stations I rang either didn’t have it or couldn’t play it…..I have no idea why…too hard? I was virtually listening to stations for 16 hours straight with no ‘22 Steps’ being played apart from the once at his chart position. The number of times I was told “we’ll see what we can do” and it was nothing gives me the shudders. It’s sad when appallingly bad music is shoved down out throats but our requests are not played. I live in Newcastle……no support!!

Ahhh, I hear your pain Dawn! I’m actually from Gosford, originally from Newcastle though. I remember being a big Human Nature fan back in the day and having the same problems convincing radio to play their stuff. Newcastle’s very rock-centric, isn’t it?

I’ve heard “22 Steps” a fair bit on Sydney radio, but exposure in the capitals just isn’t enough. I hope things go better for him next time!

You’re entitled to your opinion Sue and it’s the Damo fans who feel sorry for you. You see, we obviously loved the Album as it entered the charts at #1. You’re right in a way…..it is full of sentiment…..love for a wife and children, sorrow for a friend’s loss, joy at the beauty in those around him. Just love the lyrics, beautifully written and wonderfully sung, actually a variety of moods and tempos as well as backings. So I feel sorry for those who don’t get it.
