Shannon Noll @ Deep Rock Drive, January 19

by lkatulka on January 20th, 2008

Shannon Noll on Deep Rock DriveLast night I watched Shannon Noll doing his thing in Las Vegas courtesy of Deep Rock Drive. This cool new website allows people anywhere in the world to experience live music from the comfort of their own home.

I must admit, I was a little nervous about how my poor Broadband 1 connection would cope with the show but the technology was flawless. It’s like being at your local venue, with a few added extras. I was offered four different camera angles, allowing me to perve on the sexy scarf-wearing guitarist or watch the sort of dynamic footage seen on concert DVDs. The show is also completely interactive, allowing fans to vote for the songs they want to hear from the set list provided.

I loved this feature, although it frustrated me for the first few songs. I was keen to hear “Shine,” but the tracks from Turn It Up proved popular with fans. He kicked off with the rocking “Everybody Needs a Little Help” before slowing things down a little with “Walls.”

I was so impressed by Shannon’s energy. It was 1 am in the US when the concert began, but if he was fatigued he didn’t let it show. This was the second of Shannon’s Deep Rock Drive gigs, but he seemed determined to give everything to the largely Australian crowd. He happily answered questions about everything the internet viewers wanted to know, from the success of his American shows to the fate of his flavour saver.

A stripped down version of “What about Me?” was a highlight, followed by my song “Shine.” From there I seemed to be in tune with the rest of the viewing audience, as the set followed my own requests. The vitality of “Shine” was matched by the raw emotion of the ballads “In Pieces,” and “Now I Run.”

I couldn’t help laughing as Shannon played the final song from the set list, “Loud,” and another check box appeared on the screen with one word: Encore. Of course I’d have to click it. It seems like the rest of the virtual crowd did too, because we were then treated to “Lonely” and “Lift.”

Watching Shannon Noll there in America as I sat in Australia, I felt a great sense of pride. He’s come a long way since I first saw him as a slightly nervous rocker on Australian Idol. He’s become such a natural and powerful performer, and an accomplished songwriter. It’s only a matter of time before the United States and the rest of the world realises how talented he is.

Thanks KarynA! Did you manage to catch the Deep Rock Drive show? If not, I definitely recommend checking out one of their free shows … it’s a really great platform for getting live music out there. I just hope it’s done that for Shannon, because he deserves every success!

Lovely story, but how about a bit of truth. Sony predicted millions would watch these 2 internet concerts, then changed it to thousands after the event. Still a gross exaggeration of the real numbers, as less than 150 people bothered to watch either concert. Only $7USA to watch and so few bothered. Since Shannon’s great American experiment only 3 messages from the USA have appeared on his Myspace, and his overall web traffic is even worse than it used to be, and it was bad before. A youtube clip of a tv appearance in America has had only 762 views in 2 weeks. Not many in the USA seems to be remotely interested in the great Aussie battler. Now I know of a certain Australian Idol who gets around 7,000 views a week for a performance he did over 4 years ago. Now that’s what I’m talking about. If Sony really are intending to release Shannon in the States he better pick up some real USA interest mighty fast.

Interesting truths there Truth Fairy. I’d be interested to know how you know some of this information though, as I’d assume Shannon’s website hits etc. aren’t public knowledge.

At the end of the day, my article was simply an appraisal of the show which was really good. I’ve never been to a Shannon Noll gig before, but I was impressed with what I saw. If the US is a bit slow to pick up on Shannon, so be it. Maybe they’ll catch on later, or maybe it won’t work for him over there. It’s probably a little too early to speculate. Doesn’t change the fact that he’s doing great work.

There are online webtraffic sites Lauren. The best known one Alexa, has Shannon’s site ranked as the 1,152,308th site visited in the last 3 months. It has managed to squeeze inside the top million this week. Quite a few of the Australian idol franchise are way higher ranked than that. His forum is lucky to have even a dozen people on it at any one time. His Myspace traffic is very slow, and the number of people who viewed the concerts was clearly visible on the Deep Rock site for all to see. About 127 to one and 147 to the other. Sony must have been aware of how many bought tickets and that is why they downgraded from millions to thousands, but that did not go far enough. They should have said hundreds. Nothing wrong with a bit of truth. Don’t want people to get too carried away with all the hyp.

No there’s nothing wrong with a bit of truth, but at the end of the day I’m not really one to look for the negative slant.

I think it’s great that Shannon got to go to the US and collaborate with the likes of Richard Marx and Richie Sambora on his first trip. I think it’s great that he got to go back and play a venue like the Viper Room. I think it’s lovely that he was chosen for a site like Deep Rock Drive which allowed people all over the world to watch him play. I’m still proud of him, and I see more merit in supporting and exposing the good a local artist has done rather than tearing it down.

Truth’s all relative, and while your facts and figures might be true, so are the more positive things I’ve reported as well.

    Hi Lauren.

    Thanks for your words.

I paid for both concerts but was only able to watch the first due to other commitments.
The sound & vision was terrific and I”d recommend the format to fans of any artists.

Methinks our fellow poster should concentrate on the positives of music and not on ‘rivalries’ from long-gone competitions.

Shannon has released 3 albums that have shipped 9xplatinum, not to mention a swag of hit singles. He’s not disappearing any time soon. If his undoubted talent, hard work, & charisma combine with the right amount of luck he’ll have success overseas.

Thanks Karyn :-) I agree with you. In my blog I’m all about supporting local music and artists. I see plenty of music writers out there who do go digging for any sign of weakness, be it website hits or album sales or whatever. At the end of the day, what’s the point? It does no one any favours.

And you’re right. Shannon’s not disappearing any time soon :-).

Shannon has done many great things in his life e.g. releasing his albums and all of those singles, he has also done bad things aswell as many of the common person have done. Shannon may have made mistakes but, don’t we all? I mean if you have made a mistake in saying something accidentally, it’s just a matter of saying you’re sorry. If Shannon really did not do very well in the US, then maybe he just shouldn’t go back there and stick with Australia because he is our local hero.

Here here Jennifer! Although I think he’s definitely got what it takes to make it wherever he chooses … it’s just a matter of a lot of hard work and timing I think.
